Ann’s Orchard - Lily

'Renaissance' speaks both to the idea of revisiting the art of needlework to reflect our environment today as well as the development of art and literature in Europe at the close of the middle ages.

One of the recurring images of Renaissance art is that of the lily. Found largely in annunciation paintings, the lily symbolised Mary's purity and the golden anthers represented the 'radiance of her soul.'

My interpretation of the lily, worked in chunky cross stitch, plays with large blocks of contrasting colours, perfect for mindful stitching in our hectic world. The finished design may be framed or turned into a cushion and complements my earlier nasturtium and iris designs.
